I created this little seasons wheel last year for first graders. At the beginning of the school year, I noticed that first graders really struggle with time perception and orientation in time. I tried to guide them through the mysteries of time orientation using the most varied methods and tools possible.

This wheel is perfect for discussing the current season, its weather, and its characteristics.
I always ask them which season came before the current one and which one will follow.
We list the 4 seasons while passing a beanbag from one hand to the other (this helps with retention) or passing it to each other in a row.
Then we move on to the months. We list the 12 months and discuss which one is now, which was before, which comes after. Which are the winter months? Which are the summer months?
By second grade, I expect them to recognize the written names of the seasons and months, and at the beginning of every class, we discuss the current one and mark it on the board. At this stage, we also always discuss the current weather and the characteristics of the season and month (see the image).

We also frequently use a monthly calendar. It features the days of the week and specific dates. It’s great when we talk with the kids about: What day was the 5th? What day will the 30th be? How many days have passed in the month so far? How many days are left in the month?
